Signs You May Have an Underground Water Leak

Underground water leaks aren't always obvious. Because the damaged pipe is buried, you may notice symptoms long before you see water coming to the surface.

Common warning signs include:

  • Unexpected increases in your water bill: Your meter may be recording water escaping from a buried pipe.
  • Wet or soggy areas in your yard: Persistent moisture or unexplained puddles may indicate a leaking water line.
  • Low water pressure or reduced water flow: A damaged or deteriorating service line can affect water delivery throughout your home.
  • Unusually green patches of grass: A buried leak may continuously water one section of your lawn.
  • Water appearing near your foundation or driveway: Leaks can travel underground before becoming visible.
  • The sound of running water: You may hear water moving even when your fixtures are turned off.

These symptoms can have several causes. A professional diagnosis helps identify the problem before unnecessary excavation begins.

What Types of Underground Water Leaks Do We Repair?

These are the types of undergroud water leaks we repair in and around Atlanta.

Underground Water Service Line Leaks

Your water service line carries fresh water from the municipal supply connection to your home. Over time, aging pipes, corrosion, ground movement, and other conditions can cause these lines to leak.

Our plumbers evaluate the condition of your water service line to determine whether a localized repair or complete replacement is the better long-term solution.

Water Service Line Replacement

Some older water service lines deteriorate to the point that repairing individual leaks is no longer practical.

True Plumbing, Heating & Cooling replaces damaged underground water service lines using appropriate modern piping materials. We evaluate the line's condition, location, length, and surrounding landscape before recommending a replacement method.

Under-Slab Water Leaks

Pressurized water pipes can also develop leaks beneath concrete foundations, floors, or other structures.

These leaks can be particularly challenging because the damaged pipe isn't readily accessible. Our team evaluates the available repair options, which may include accessing the damaged section or rerouting the water line.

Can You Replace a Water Line Without Digging Up My Entire Yard?

In some situations, yes.

Traditional water line replacement often requires excavating a trench along the pipe's route. However, depending on the property's conditions, horizontal directional drilling may allow a new water service line to be installed with considerably less disruption to landscaping and hardscaping.

Real Atlanta Project: Saving a Morningside Yard

When a homeowner in Atlanta's Morningside neighborhood discovered water pooling in her yard, True Plumbing, Heating & Cooling founder and Georgia Master Plumber Ryan Hanson (MP210510) investigated.

The home's original galvanized steel water service line dated back to 1938 and had deteriorated. Replacing it through conventional excavation would have meant navigating a sloping yard, sidewalk, and retaining wall.

Instead, True Plumbing, Heating & Cooling used horizontal drilling to install a new 1-inch copper water service line while preserving the surrounding landscaping and structures.

Ryan also discovered that the home's water pressure exceeded 100 PSI and replaced the pressure-reducing valve to correct the issue.
