Peachtree Boulevard Water Transmission Main Replacement Project
What you need to know!
Because we have so many customers who own homes and businesses in the Brookhaven and Chamblee areas, I wanted to create a post that contains useful information about this local project and offer advice on how this can impact your property. Dekalb and Chamblee have coordinated well and announced that all property owners should be notified via door hangers and mail notices.
The water mains in our area were originally installed in the 1940’s and 1950’s and are showing more signs of aging. The city has decided to fully replace the very large (1 foot to 3 foot diameter) sections of pipe shown on the map. In total, it will be over 21,000 feet of pipe! The project is being done to:
- Reduce high costs of emergency repairs
- Reduce wasted clean water from pinhole leaks and worn fittings
- Upgrade the community for future generations
- Improve the flow due to high tuberculation (see picture below)
With the county interrupting your incoming water service over such a long time span, it’s helpful to know what to do if you experience ill effects. These strange occurrences may include a sudden loss of water pressure and visible debris, dirt, rust, or air bubbles in your water. In extreme cases, there can be damage to your pipes and fixtures. For example, if a heavy amount of debris flows into your waterlines, it can clog water filters and faucet aerators which will slow the flow of your water. In other cases, debris, rust and dirt can flow into your water heater causing prolonged rusty, dirty looking water when you fill the tub. Or you may smell a slight iron scent when showering.
As always, we advise only drinking and cooking with water coming from the cold side of your faucets because it is less likely to have particulates that come out of the water heater. And for further protection, please see our page about water filtration. We offer the most pure drinking water you can get delivered to your kitchen sink!
If you have questions about abnormal pressure or water issues in your home, you can contact the Dekalb County Watershed Department, and as always please be patient with them as they get a lot of inquiries. Or, for issues at your property, give us a call at 770-PLUMBER.
Dates for specific areas impacted can be found in the links below.
